Aging Fabulous

So… You are 50.

by Teri on April 24th, 2007

You are 50. Now what? Mid-life crisis? Heck no! It is time to start enjoying your beautiful life you have.

exerciseOne of the most important things for those in their 50’s to do is to incorporate exercise into your daily routine.

By exercising, you should be able to keep your blood sugar levels in good control, preventing diabetes and positively affecting your blood pressure and heart rate. Exercise is also very important for healthy bones - osteoporosis prevention, possibly.

An easy thing to do is to incorporate weight bearing/resistance exercises to strengthen your bones. Resistance exercise to help build your bone means that you exercise to the point of exhaustion. Lets say you are lifting a dumbbell, you need to do as many reps in order to exhaust that muscle. And you will know when it is exhausted when you simply can’t do another lift with that muscle. This is the point that the resistance is enough so that you begin building more bone.

The Exercise Data Base has a great selection of resistance exercises for you to follow. Try it and let me know how you feel.

Thanks for the tip on the Exercise Data Base. That’s very interesting and provides some great guidelines. I so hate to exercise, and I appreciate every little bit of help that I can get.

Last week I purchased one of those elastic bands, and I really like it. It doesn’t feel like I’m working out at all when I use it. It’s actually fun, and I just gleaned some more ideas from the Exercise Data Base on how to use it.

I had a thought when reading your post, because a little while back I wrote a post on my own midlife blog about how lovemaking benefits us, physiologically. Forbes magazine did a story about the health benefits of sex, and I based my post on that. It’s kind of interesting. Did you know, for example, that having sex is even good for our dental hygiene? Personally, I thought that one was a stretch, but apparently there’s some science behind it. It’s something for those of us who are “women of a certain age” to think about and consider.

Yes, the exercise data base does have a lot of great ideas. I think I am going to pick up one of those exercise bands too.

And - yes - I don’t think that there is anything not good about sex (as long as it is done safely). A definite great calorie burner!
