Aging Fabulous - This is when the fun starts!

The Sun vs. Self-Tanner.

by Teri on April 25th, 2007

sunIf you haven’t heard by now, the Sun is just not good for our skin. With Skin Cancer on the rise, I am sure we have all heard the facts about how quickly the sun can do damage to our skin.

But I am wondering. Is there a point when we just give up and still stay in the sun, thinking that the damage is already done. Or do we think it will not effect us?

Or you could be one of the many that are addicted to self-tanners. Many of us, yes - I am including myself, fall into this category.

I will tell you what I do. I do use self-tanner, and sunscreen when I am going out into the sun. But I don’t avoid the sun. I wear a hat at the beach and spend a lot of time under an umbrella when not dipping my feet into the water. I do spend a lot of time in the pool in the summer, and the sun’s rays are surely beaming down on me. I make sure to apply sunscreen every few hours if I am just in the yard and the pool, but like I said, I do not avoid it. I couple my “safe” sun tanning with self-tanner. In the summer months, I usually only apply it twice a week, and I will soon share my favorites with you.

I would love to hear, in the comments, if you still are a sun worshiper, with sunscreen, without, or if you only self-tan. Let’s tell the truth - we won’t hold it against you!

I was a sun-worshipper in my twenties, but have sworn it off! I now wear sunscreen as well as covering my face with a hat, and I don’t lay out in the sun ever. I have a souvenir I’d rather not have from the days before I saw the light (and simpy saw the sun instead)… it’s a large sunspot on my right temple. I got it in the Caribbean, and boy do I wish I could give it back!

I wish you could give that sunspot back too - not the best souvenir :).

I am glad to hear that you are more sun smart now, Beth.

I avoid the sun and use sunscreen often. I really like the spray on sunscreens.

As far as sunless tanning goes, you really can’t get physically addicted to it but you can get addicted to sun tanning. I remember writing some research that said so last summer.
